Want sales success? Know what you are “putting out there”.

Stuck on a problem, check experiencing writers block or suffering through constant distraction? You are not alone. Procrastination plagues students and businessmen and women alike. The resulting feelings of being overwhelmed only make the problem worse. Here are three quick tips to start off your study/work session on the right foot.

1. Mind your space. A cluttered space is distracting and does not feel comfortable. Find a box and clear it all off everything (computers/screens included) except what you specifically need . Don’t worry about organizing it first (this is a distraction technique and promotes procrastination). Just make a clear and comfortable space. Your surroundings are important too. Start with a quiet space with no distraction and limit the noise.

2. Get a timer and set it for 30-45 minutes. Part of the challenge with procrastination is the urge to take “study breaks”. People who exercise talk about the point in the work out where they want to quit, but at that point, they need to push through. This is the same with studying/working. At times when our brains are challenged, we look for ways to relieve the pressure. If you have a timer, you can just tell yourself to keep going for a few minutes more. Once the time goes off, give yourself a 15-20 minute break. Do something fun like taking a walk, petting the dog or some other physical activity (not online social media or games). Keep with the program until the day’s goals are done. After you are finished, give yourself the freedom to reward yourself with activities that before, were distracting (social media, games, television).

3. One subject/one project at a time. Setting out the daily/hourly goals of the project is really important. For those that suffer from procrastination, the point at which the work is being addressed is usually under pressure and stress. Feelings of being overwhelmed by the volume of what needs to be accomplish feels terrible and leads to poor work performance. The old adage is the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time applies. Break out the homework, project into your 30-45 minute goals. Do this quickly based on how you feel it might logically happen. Your intuition and left brain analytical side works much better this way. Only focus on what needs to happy right now. When overwhelming feelings creep in, just go back to your plan for right now. As you get better at this, you will find yourself naturally setting and achieving smaller goals to accomplish projects before they are due – it happens naturally!

BONUS TIP: I use magazine holders (the cheap cardboard ones you can get at IKEA or Target) for each topic. All the materials such as: books, folders, binders, etc.. go into each box. As materials come in that I need to complete the task, I put them into the appropriate box. When I am ready to do my work, I grab that box and work from it. When I am done, everything goes back into the box and onto my shelf and I grab the next subject. This tip makes it so much easier to keep organized and ready for the next study session or work project.

Why do people buy and how does the sales rep emotionally influence purchasing decisions?

This can be arguably the most important question executives, order

So what can a sales representative do to close more business?  Here are three tips to get you thinking about how the psychology of the sale works to your advantage:

1. Know Thyself:  You live in your head 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  You know everything about yourself, except how others really see you.  For most of us, this “blind side” is uncomfortable to address.  However it is key to personal business success.   How you are perceived has little to do with your intellectual intent and everything to do with how you handle stress, ambiguity and pressure from other people.  Take a class on the subject (see Psychology of the Sale), or work with a business coach that will spend the time with you to explore the strengths and weaknesses of your personality.

2. Know your triggers:  Do you know when a sales call doesn’t “feel right”?  Do you know what you do when that happens?   Having a plan when you start to feel flush, or your stomach tightens, or you become anxious is really important to interrupt this pattern.  The good news is these triggers can be cues to the client’s emotion.  Learn to read it correctly and you can turn around the conversation and develop trust quickly.  You need to develop ability to analyze and change your behavior on the fly and in reaction to your clients’ emotional needs.

3.  What emotional trigger does your product/service illicit in your prospective customer?:  Are you selling based on fear (i.e. if you don’t have insurance, you could be exposed) or based on possibility (i.e. drink our cola and you will be irresistible to others)?    Consciously know what your product/service emotionally solves.  Remember, we as sales reps feel comfortable knowing the facts and figures about the problems our product/services solve – but few know the emotional problems they solve.  This is a key differentiator for you and your business.

For those of you that have taken the first of the Pathwise 10 Essentials, patient you know about Suspension of Attention. This concept explains the idea of grounding yourself in the physical world as a means to balance your thinking brain. It’s a form of active meditation that aligns the different inputs: fligh/flight or freeze; emotions; and cognitive thinking. By doing this, see you gain more insigt and can react more appropriately during times of fear, ambiguity and stress. You will find a clarity and understanding of what the other person’s intention is, beyond what he or she is not saying.

We have very similar and repeatable physical patterns that emerge, when we are feeling threatened or have emotional unbalance. These physical patters, or “triggers” may be a tighness in the chest or jaw, flush face, or maybe even a nervous habit or desire to run away. All of these are clues from our primitive brain that we are in danger. The brain doesn’t know the difference between a tiger about to pounce, or your boss calling you into his office unexpectedly. However, you have a powerful tool that will keep you from diving into your self-preservation patterns that make innovation and creativity impossible.

Once you realize you are being triggered, then your response is to Suspend Attention. We do this by thinking about a body part, or connecting with our physical environment. Your homework for this month is to:

1. Recognize your trigger – How do you respond when things heat up? Do you know what you do next? Do you fight, freeze, flee? Just taking inventory is a huge step in recognizing and making conscious the patterns that may not have helped us the way we wanted them to in the past.

2. Practice Suspension of Attention by thinking of a body part. You can think of your foot on the floor, fingers touching each other, or anything that interrupts the pattern enough to give you and opportunity to assess the situation and CHOOSE a conscious (rather than unconscious) response.

What are signs and how do they speak to us?  Some believe in them from a divine intervention perspective. We see little things in our lives that somehow have meaning from another spirit sent to guide us along our journey. Some are searching for a scientific alignment of the Universe to explain the unexplainable.  Signs are merely scientific evidence of different dimensions interacting with this one.  Some already have the answers from ancient wisdom.  In the course of human evolution and suffering, buy more about
we have lost our connection to this wisdom from the past.  Signs have always been there, more about
we just haven’t been open to seeing them.  Some believe in the collective unconscious that wills us to manifest our dreams.  Some think this is all hokey mythology and life is completely random and coincidental.   Whatever you believe, there is no question that we want to understand them and give meaning to signs.

 

I’m of the persuasion that we have thousands, if not millions of things around us that we are oblivious to, that can help us think differently.  Unless our unconscious deems something noteworthy, we don’t see them or are able to ponder on them.  I have a few book ideas in my head and have already started on one, then I got busy.  This last week, it just happened that I had encounters with four different authors, all of whom gave me great advice on how to start and encouraged me to move forward with my ideas.  Did I bring these people to me at this time?  Did I go searching for them and this is the pinnacle that we all met?  I am not sure, but I took the timing of this as a sign that I am ready to integrate the book idea into my life right now.   This “sign” is also the subject of this blog, and who knows where that will go?  We all have a path we walk and what is most comforting to me, is that you can choose to go as fast, or as slow as you want.  You can deviate, and take another path and if you don’t like it, you can turn around and go a different way.  Too often we are plagued with this nagging feeling that we aren’t living up to our “purpose”.  I think this is a bit of crap.  We are living a purpose every moment.  Our purpose shifts and changes with our direction. The question is, do you want to be blindly led and distracted through your life, looking for what is right under your nose?  Or do you take a chance to stop and enjoy where you are and look at the gifts and ponder your options?  Signs appear in the later, where your mind, body and spirit can align in the present to count your blessings, and ponder all of the wonderful opportunities you get to share.
